The Kama is a martial arts weapon based on a farming instrument, the small scythe used for cutting rice. This weapon is used in a variety of Japanese, Filipino, Indonesian and Chinese martial arts styles. In Okinawan/Japanese Kobudo, Kama are traditionally used in pairs.

2021年9月2日 · The peasants began using the kama, a farm tool, as a way of defending themselves. Samurai already had their katanas, wakizashis, naginatas, and other more formal weapons. It’s unlikely they would have used a scythe either for farming or for defense.

2023年10月18日 · Kama are small sickles, used to harvest crops. Kamajustu, the art of using the sickles as a self-defense tool, is one of the hallmarks of kobudō. The many weapons bans throughout history did not apply to kama, since they were required tooling for farmers.

2023年5月12日 · The kama was the only bladed tool for farming in Okinawa at the time, and it was made of metal. The inhabitants of Okinawa have honed the kama’s very sharp blade (“tongue”) and the pointed blade tip (“nose”) into a lethal weapon that could readily strike and kill foes while also deflecting powerful punch or kick blows.

Kama techniques include blocking and stabbing, thrusting and slicing, as well as throwing and striking. Kōbu no Kama is the only kama kata in Koburyū. The kama are used in pairs. One kama is often used to hook and trap an opponent’s weapon while cutting and slashing with the other.
