Feb 24, 2015 · Whether or not you need a Kerdi membrane is a factor of use. In normal residential use I wouldn't worry about it. Backerboard plus a waterproofing membrane like Redgard is all that is needed for tub surrounds with thinset then tile. Kerdi really offers very little advantage over hardiboard plus membrane.

Aug 19, 2023 · Schluter says to spread thinset on the Kerdi board and then lay the tile. I spoke to my guy about this, who by the way is Kerdi certified by schluter and has 30 years experience. He said most of the tile has thinset so it shouldn't be a concern.

I don't think you'll need anything other than regular joint compound here. I would make sure you buy the widest trowel you can afford and simply work as much compound as possible to level the wall. Your kerdi board placed over the top (when used with the proper thinset) will block the water from reaching this layer.

Apr 16, 2024 · Any seam should be sealed with waterproof tape, such as Kerdi-Band or something similar. Install it by the instructions from the manufacturer, which is usually imbedded in thinset, but could be different depending on the product. This is true with cement board or any other wall and floor covering meant for a shower.

As I was installing my kerdi board to my studs, I noticed that there were some gaps between the wall / board and my flange/board. If I attempt to straighten the contact between the board and tub, the gap between the board and wall become larger, and vice versa.
