Initially people diagnosed tend to think sugar-free anything is great; however, foods like potatoes, rice, dried beans are all sugar-free and pretty high in carbs. Certainly you're free to eat anything you like or want.

The thing to watch out for in sugar-free treats such as cookies, etc., is that they are probably made with wheat flour and the flour is just as much a culprit in raising blood sugar as sugar is.
