Nemadactylus macropterus, the tarakihi, jackass morwong or deep sea perch, is a species of marine ray-finned fish, traditionally regarded as belonging to the family Cheilodactylidae, the members of which are commonly known as morwongs. Small Jackass Morwong are a popular ‘plate-sized’ fish to roast, steam or BBQ. The moist, sweet flesh of the BREAM family are an excellent alternative when cooking plate-sized fish, and fillets can be panfried, steamed, poached or grilled.

King Morwong can be distinguished from Jackass by its dark band on the outer upper half of the pectoral fin. Jackass Morwong, and the closely related but far less common King Morwong, are usually sold under the marketing name ‘Morwong’.

Jackass morwong are found on open, flat sandy regions of the continental shelf and around reef margins all around Tasmania but are more commonly caught on the east and south coasts from 10-300 metres deep.

Jackass Morwong is a large, long-lived species associated with exposed sand and silt habitat from central Queensland to southern Western Australia, including Tasmania (Edgar 2008). Abundance of Jackass Morwong is low in Tasmanian waters and, as such, the species is not targeted in Tasmania, but landed as by-product of gillnetting.

Though much more renowned in New Zealand (where it is called Tarakihi, grows much larger, and is loved as a fish and chip species) the Jackass Morwong calls the entire southern half of Australia home as well.
