The course aims to explain the scientific principles and techniques behind the work of forensic scientists and will be illustrated with numerous case studies from Singapore and around the world. Some questions which we will attempt to address include: How did forensics come about?

Forensic Science is a multidisciplinary field that involves the application of scientific methods and techniques to investigate criminal activities or legal issues. It is primarily concerned with the collection, analysis, and interpretation of evidence found at crime scenes.

Forensic means the use of science or scientific methods to detect and solve crimes. As science continually advances, forensic science approaches become more and more important to understanding and using evidence such as DNA, blood, or ballistics in court.

Roderick Bates is an Organic Chemist by training, but has been teaching Forensic Science by accident since 2005. He earned a PhD from Imperial College, London and followed this with postdoctoral work at Colorado State University.
