An intramedullary rod, also known as an intramedullary nail (IM nail) or inter-locking nail or Küntscher nail (without proximal or distal fixation), is a metal rod forced into the medullary cavity of a bone. IM nails have long been used to treat fractures of long bones of the body.

Intramedullary Pin (IM Pin) is a thin metal rod commonly used in orthopedic procedures for holding large bone fractures together. These pins function similarly to K Wire, but are larger in diameter. Steinmann Pins are available in various Types, lengths and diameters.

Intramedullary pins and cerclage are available in most primary care veterinary practices and can be used successfully to treat selected fractures in dogs and cats.

Intramedullary pins and Kirschner wires are placed in bone either by hand with a Jacob’s Chuck or at low speed with a power drill. Jacob’s chuck extensions are commercially available to add to power drills so that long pins or wires can be drilled with minimal wobble.

Steinmann Pins are most commonly called an intramedullary pin, used to repair fractures that cause minimal damage to the bone and soft tissue. These types of pins are made up of a thin metal rod that is usually used to control large bone fractures together during orthopedic surgeries.
