Coprinopsis atramentaria, commonly known as the common ink cap, tippler's bane, or inky cap, is a species of fungus. Previously known as Coprinus atramentarius, it is the second best-known ink cap and previous member of the genus Coprinus after C. comatus.

An inky cap is any of about 350 cosmopolitan mushroom species, so named for the disintegration of the mushroom cap into an inklike liquid following spore discharge.

The Common Inky Cap. The common inky cap mushroom is bell shaped and has a striated surface on its cap. The cap is light grey or buff in color and has a ragged or pleated edge. As in the shaggy mane, the gills are white at first and then to turn to grey and finally to black.

From tree stumps or buried wood of deciduous hardwood trees, Coprinopsis atramentaria, the Common Ink Cap, arises in small clumps from spring until early winter.

Inky caps are fascinating mushrooms. They are saprobes, assisting in the decomposition of wood, dung, grassy debris, forest litter, and so on. Most of the species have black spore prints and gills that liquefy, at least partially, as the mushroom matures.
