I think there’s a further back prototype to Gandalf than Merlin - Odin might be more to the Gandalf story in a way. Regardless Merlin, Gandalf, and Odin/Wotan all fulfill both the Herald & Mentor aspects of Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey themes of story and myth that underly many stories, epics and myths all over the world.
