In response, Herodias held a grudge, bitterness, or resentment against John. She wanted someone to kill him. Herodias had a grudge against him and wanted to put him to death and could not do so . . . Mark 6:18 (NASB) But the next verse reveals that she pressured King Herod into taking John’s life, but she was unsuccessful.

For when Herod had John arrested, he bound him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip. For John had been saying to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.” And although he wanted to put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they regarded him as a prophet.

Herod Was A Fox. Jesus’ reply to the Pharisees teaches us that He understood they were working with Herod. His reply to their statement, ““Go away, leave here, for Herod wants to kill You” was a refusal to leave and He told them to tell that to Herod.

Matthew 2:16 also reports he was a murderous man. Then when Herod saw that he had been tricked by the magi, he became very enraged, and sent and slew all the male children who were in Bethlehem and all its vicinity, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the magi.

Now notice the next words “in time.” The Greek word for “time” can be found in Mark 6:21. The occasion being described is a birthday party for Herod. He has invited the lords, military commanders and leading men of Galilee. His wife is called Herodias and she hates John the Baptist. She wants John the Baptist dead. Mark 6:21 states,
