Henry Ossawa Tanner was an African American artist who earned international acclaim for his religious paintings. His father was a prominent minister and his mother a former slave who escaped the South through the Underground Railroad.

Despite being one of the leading religious genre painters of his age, Henry Ossawa Tanner is best remembered for two paintings depicting domestic scenes of African American life and for being the first black artist to gain international fame.

This is an incomplete list of paintings by American painter Henry Ossawa Tanner (June 21, 1859 – May 25, 1937). Tanner is the first Black artist to have a major solo exhibition in the United States, [1] and the first to have his work acquired for the collection of the White House. [2]

Tanner painted landscapes, religious subjects, and scenes of daily life in a realistic style that echoed that of Eakins. [19][20] While works like The Banjo Lesson depicted everyday scenes of African American life, Tanner later painted religious subjects. [21] .

After returning to Paris in 1894 one of Tanner’s paintings was accepted for exhibition at that year’s Salon. He abandoned genre works focusing on Black subjects and began painting the biblical scenes for which he became best known.
