But after weeks/months I realized that their sparkly high frequencies was fatiguing, and really didn't sound like "real" music. Instead, the detailed treble suckered me in -- it was enticing, but not satisfying.

I have the Time Warp CD which has Don Dorsey's Ascent on it. On the bottom of the CD it says WARNING: Time Warp contains some of the most powerful signal content ever released on a commercial recording. Ascent is great for stereo sound (not for surround) and higher end sound. After Ascent is Introduction to Also Sprach Zarathustra.

I think a useful test track is one that makes good headphones sound good and bad headphones sound bad, so I've populated my playlist accordingly. I find this works well on the technical side. For timbre, I use a random smattering of dozens of vocal tracks, the important bit being that they collectively cover most variations in human vocal register.
