A haughty spirit refers to an attitude of superiority and disdain for others. This phrase emphasizes the inevitable consequences of such an attitude. In biblical history, many figures who exhibited a haughty spirit faced dire consequences.

One more form of unbelief that we need to talk about is the unbelief of a haughty spirit, or pride. There is a very close relationship between unbelief and pride. Here is how I would describe that relationship.

A haughty spirit, often synonymous with pride and arrogance, is a condition of the heart that elevates oneself above others and, at times, even above God. The Bible provides numerous warnings and illustrations regarding the dangers and consequences of harboring a haughty spirit.

And a haughty spirit before stumbling. But Your eyes are on the haughty whom You abase. His idle boasts are false. The earth mourns and withers, the world fades and withers, the exalted of the people of the earth fade away. Of his haughtiness, his pride, his arrogance and his self-exaltation. On My holy mountain. But humility goes before honor.

Paul's counsel on the extreme disciplines of the super-righteous, such as those practiced in the world by ascetics, is that they produce a puffed-up mind—pride, a haughty spirit—rather than humble obedience that truly impresses God, such as that praised so highly in Isaiah 66:1-2:

18 Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall. 19 Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud. 20 He that handleth a matter wisely shall find good: and whoso trusteth in the LORD, happy is he.
