The Gracey area specific curettes are a set of instruments. They all are designed with the 70° offset blade, but the shanks are designed for adaptation on designated tooth surfaces. Notice the differences in the shank designs of the set of standard Gracey curettes below.

Standard Gracey Curettes, also called Finishing Gracey Curettes, are adaptable to root surfaces in periodontal pockets. Their long, flexible shanks allow for enhanced tactile sensitivity and are best used for fine calculus removal and root planing.

The terminal shank is 3 mm longer than the standard Gracey shank, thereby easily permitting blade placement into deep periodontal pockets. 1

Mini blades that are half the length of the standard Gracey curettes allow easier insertion and adaptation in deep, narrow pockets, furcation areas, concavities, depressions and deep and tight facial, lingual or palatal pockets.

The 17/18 Gracey Curette is designed to improve access to the distal surfaces of posterior teeth (Figure 15). The deep angle of the shank, along with multiple bends, provides crown clearance and prevents interference of the handle with the opposing arch and teeth.
