Still an innovation lab, but now a separate division within Alphabet, Google X becomes X, and its job is to generate moonshot-based businesses for Alphabet. Alphabet forms in August 2015 , separating Google from a set of smaller companies working on very different problems.

At X, projects prototype, experiment and iterate to derisk their moonshot technologies and build the foundation for a strong business. When the signals are right, projects move on from the Factory to the next stage of their journey.

There’s no such thing as a “typical day” at a moonshot factory. Some days we’re 3D printing prototypes in our Design Kitchen. Other days we’re out in the field, flying drones in the Australian bush or testing our underwater vision skills in the Arctic Circle.

Technology is a tool, not the end game. If you catch yourself spending a lot of time refining a new technology, saying “look at the cool thing I’ve just invented — it must be great for something!”, without a clear sense of what that something is, then that’s usually a bad sign.
