"Git gud" originated with Metal Gear Online. The meaning of the phrase has shifted slightly back and forth over time. When Dark Souls came out, a lot of threads were started on 4chan where people didn't understand the mechanics or mindset needed to play. As a response, people would just say "git gud".

2022年3月23日 · 'Git gud' is definitely a meme, but it's a meme in this community. Outside of it however, one might not know of it's endearment or extrapolate what it really means (learning mechanics, understanding how the game is played, trying different things out, etc.).

The response "git gud" is also just one half of the coin. "just play something else" is also a valid sentiment (which people also advise, so I'm not just saying the sub is toxic or anything). There's no shame in deciding not to finish a game that is too difficult or too frustrating for people.
