Try styling the beard, use a blowdryer and comb / brush to get it all in one direction ( unless your going for the natural look ) I'd do a trim just to even everything out probably about a 1/2 inch or so but definitely not more then 1 inch, better to start taking less off then more.

Beard hair needs to be looked after, just like head hair if you're lucky enough to have it. I do not (bald as a coot by 27) and my beard has been best described as looking like a badger's arse.

Gandalf also resembles Väinämöinen from the Kalevala. And Tolkien does describe Gandalf as appearing as a short old man bent with age who has a long white beard and no mustache, which is all very similar to Der Berggeist. The main difference as far as I can see is the mantle which is red in the painting, but grey for Gandalf.

You're dealing with the principle actor, stunt doubles, scale doubles and CGI doubles, all of which have fake beards, all in various lighting schemes, inside and outside (plus color timing and other post production work), and in scenes that might be shot months or years apart.
