Amtrak has always used the former NP depot in Spokane. The original Empire Builder route was along the former NP thru Pasco and Yakima because the BN claimed capacity issues on the former GN line and didn't want Amtrak interfering with their freight trains. Today, the Portland section of the Empire Builder uses a portion of that route.

An additional 35 miles of new construction brought the GN into Chemult, completing the new line. The first GN trains entered Klamath Falls in 1928. GN did not pause long in Klamath Falls. By this point they had an agreement with the Western Pacific Railroad to connect their line with a new branch of the WP to be built northward from Keddie, CA.
