Francis II (French: François II; 19 January 1544 – 5 December 1560) was King of France from 1559 to 1560. He was also King of Scotland as the husband of Mary, Queen of Scots, from 1558 until his death in 1560. He ascended the throne of France at age 15 after the accidental death of his father, Henry II, in 1559.

Francis I (French: François Ier; Middle French: Françoys; 12 September 1494 – 31 March 1547) was King of France from 1515 until his death in 1547. He was the son of Charles, Count of Angoulême, and Louise of Savoy. He succeeded his first cousin once removed and father-in-law Louis XII, who died without a legitimate son.

He was born in 1544, eleven years after his father’s marriage to the Italian noblewoman Catherine de Medici. He was named after his paternal grandfather, Francis I. When Francis I died, Francis II was proclaimed the heir apparent to the throne at just three years old.

On 18 September 1559, with the court still in mourning, Francis was crowned King Francis II at Reims by its archbishop, the Cardinal of Lorraine. It took four nobles to support the Crown of Charlemagne over his puny head.

Francis I was the ruler of France from 1515 to 1547, under whose reign the French Renaissance flourished. He was not directly in line to the throne, but the death of his father and the lack of male heirs from successive kings made him the presumptive heir.
