font awesome is terrible for performance. use custom icons and serve them as SVG or img. Bootstrap Icons are interesting. I think you can pull it into your scss files and comment out icons you don't use to keep it optimized. There is even react package very well done, that does tree shaking and easy to use.

Font Awesome is designed to be used with inline elements. The <i> and <span> elements are widely used for icons. Also note that if you change the font-size or color of the icon's container, the icon changes. Same things goes for shadow, and anything else that gets inherited using CSS.
