FLUSH JOINT – The Brick and Blocklayers Federation does not recommend the use of flush joints unless they are compacted. If the mortar is flush jointed and not compacted it can lead to the following issues: • When veneer is to be honed, the mortar can ‘flick’ out with honing process.

Flush joints are used in brick wall construction, when the surface requires plastering and final finishing. Thus the flush joints will be hidden. The construction of flush joint takes more time and work to make it watertight and water resistant.

Consider a typical brick veneer with a desired expansion joint size of ½ in. (13 mm) and a sealant with 50 percent compressibility. Equation 1 gives the following theoretical expansion joint spacing:
