A flatcar (US) (also flat car, [1] or flatbed) is a piece of rolling stock that consists of an open, flat deck mounted on trucks (US) or bogies (UK) at each end. Occasionally, flat cars designed to carry extra heavy or extra large loads are mounted on a pair (or rarely, more) of bogies under each end.

Flat cars are designed to carry oversize loads. In researching these special freight cars, I have put together a lot of information. "FD" - Depressed center flat car of special construction having the portion of floor extending between trucks depressed to provide necessary overhead clearance for lading.
