Early games, notably Mass Effect, would overlay a film grain effect for the purpose of fooling the human brain into thinking the image/textures/details had more detail than they actually did. Later games now use it as more of a look and feel.

You can make games look like Skyward Sword, throw in a film grain, make a black and white mode like Ghosts of Tsushima, etc . . .

2023年9月2日 · Film grain is designed to simulate film. Photographic film has crystals in it, which creates the grainy effect you'd see in movies and pictures taken with it. Digital cameras, and of course, a simulated digital environment like in a video game, doesn't have this. And to give off this "cinematic" feel, they add in this film grain effect.

2019年8月26日 · Film grain is usually added to avoid banding in shadows, like the lockers on the left here in Resident Evil 2. With it enabled, that goes away, because the grain fills in the colour gradients. I usually disable it, but I'll have to see how this game handles lighting without it.

2022年6月29日 · Film grain works best when you can barely notice it. If it's good it should actually soften banding and enhance the image, but if it's too strong you'll just see speckles everywhere. I suggest anyone who is categorically against it to at least try it on a per game basis and see if it's too strong before disabling it. You might be surprised.

2023年9月10日 · Only film grain I can tolerate is actual film grain in older movies and tv shows. Its extremely difficult to remove it without reducing image quality. But for modern stuff, hell no. Get rid of grain.

I love film grain in games. For example Silent Hill 2 looks too sterile and clean without it. It adds a bit of filmic movement and life to the visuals. I can live without it in most games, but I appreciate it when it’s done well. For example Alien Isolation is so much better with a little film grain to make it look like the film it’s emulating.
