The FH70 (field howitzer for the 1970s) is a towed 155 mm howitzer used by several nations. In 1963, NATO agreed a NATO Basic Military Requirement 39 for close support artillery, either towed or tracked.

The FH-70, 155mm Gun Howitzer, first placed in service in the 1980's was a joint development of the UK, Germany and Italy. While the FH-70 is no longer in service with Great Britain or Germany, they are in service with Italy, Japan and several other countries.

A family of 155 mm ammunition was developed for the FH-70 which gives the weapon a significant increase in range and lethality for both direct and indirect firing against armoured targets. The FH-70 can also fire NATO standard ammunition including the US Copperhead Cannon Launched Guided Projectile.

The maximum range is 24.7 km with NATO standard ammunition and 30 km with extended range shells. The burst rate of fire is 3 shells in 15 seconds. Sustained rate of fire is 3 to 6 rpm.
