In the non-spiral arrangement, nascent to developed leaves always follow this rule, so that the number of leaf rows is kept constant irrespective of stem growth.
In 1861 the botanist Hugh Falconer sent Charles Darwin a letter suggesting that phyllotaxis was a deeper phenomenon than Natural Selection and he should look into it. Darwin did so, getting help from his mathematician son George and botanists Aza Gray and Joseph Hooker.
