The Ether Dome is a surgical operating amphitheater in the Bulfinch Building at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, United States. It served as the hospital's operating room from its opening in 1821 until 1867.

William T.G. Morton made history on October 16, 1846 in Massachusetts General Hospital’s surgical amphitheater, now known as the Ether Dome, when he demonstrated the first public surgery using anesthetic (ether). Between 1821 and 1868, more than 8,000 operations were performed in the Ether Dome.

The operating theater, which was to become known as the Ether Dome (see below), was used for that purpose from 1821 until 1867, when a new surgical building was constructed. The Ether Dome then served at different times as a dormitory for nurses, a dining hall and a storage area.

On October 15 and October 16, 2021, the Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine (DACCPM) hosted a two-day virtual celebration to commemorate the 175th anniversary of Ether Day, the first successful public demonstration of the use of ether for surgical anesthesia.

The Ether Dome at Mass General, the site of the first successful public surgery using ether as an anesthetic, is not housed within the museum. The Dome is often used for meetings. To find out when the Dome is not in use, call the museum at 617 724 8009 during its open hours.
