Essential oils from cinnamon bark, common thyme, and wild thyme were successfully entrapped into lignin nanoparticles for the preparation of a bio-based biocide delivery system. Molecular interactions of essential oil compounds with lignin nanoparticles were strongly indicated based on Py-GCMS and FTIR spectroscopy.

In the system, lignin was used as a sustainable and environmentally friendly encapsulation material to protect and control the release of clove essential oil (EOC), combing hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) induced the formation of CTAB-lignin composites through electrostatic adsorption and π-π interactions.

The liquid-solid ratio is essential for extracting essential oil and lignin and affects the extraction efficiency, yield, and cost [29]. In the process of steam distillation, increasing the liquid-solid ratio appropriately promoted water dispersion, accelerated lignin leaching, and accelerated the extraction of essential oil.
