The nakfa (ISO 4217 code: ERN; Tigrinya: ናቕፋ naḳfa, or Arabic: ناكفا or نقفة nākfā) is the currency of Eritrea and was introduced on 15 November 1997 to replace the Ethiopian birr at par. About 150 kilometer north of Keren lies the capital of the Sahel province, Nacfa. It holds a special significance for Eritreans, being home to the EPLF during the war. For a long time it was the base of EPLF resistance.
