In this special issue, our goal was to compile current evidence delineating the impact of emotion-related socialization behaviors (ERSBs) on children’s emotion, self-regulation, and developmental outcomes.

2013年6月13日 · Emotion socialization includes caregiver behaviors, both overt and covert, that influence which emotions youth experience, youths’ decisions to express or suppress emotional expressions, and how they go about expressing emotions [2]. Parental emotion socialization has significant implications for children’s socioemotional functioning.

In particular, parental negative emotionality and negative reactions to children's expression of emotion are associated with children's negative emotionality and low social competence. In addition, possible moderators of effects such as level of emotional arousal are discussed.

We identified patterns of expressed emotions that unfolded during each discussion and examined how interdyad differences in those patterns were associated with mothers' and daughters' internalizing symptoms. Dyads differed with respect to whether mothers or daughters tended to regulate positive emotion expressions.

2024年6月1日 · We explore evidence relating to the roles of parents, peers, and teachers in shaping children's emotional development at various stages across childhood.

The various papers have addressed a variety of issues including key mediating pathways, predictions of emotion-related socialization behaviors, moderators of pathways, and various potential outcomes of emotion-related socialization behaviors.

We begin by presenting our theoretical model of parental socialization of emotions. Next, we review literature on three aspects of emotion-related socialization practices including (1) socializers’ reactions to children’s emotions, (2) socializers’ own expressions of emotions and regulation, and (3) socializers’ discussion of emotions.

In this special issue, our goal was to compile current evidence delineating the impact of emotion-related socialization behaviors (ERSBs) on children’s emotion, self-regulation, and developmental outcomes. The work in this issue highlights the processes involved in predicting both parents’ ERSBs as well as children’s developmental outcomes.

Consistent with this view, researchers across disciplines tend to engage in three interrelated lines of discourse about emotion socialization.
