Emerald Pool is a small, shallow lake, with an area of less than one acre. It is located about 80 meters above Vernal Fall in Yosemite National Park. It is named for its deep green color, which is caused by algae living on the rocks at the bottom of the pool.

Emerald Pool was once blue with some yellow thermophiles that caused its waters to appear green, hence its name.

More than one person has gotten in Emerald Pool and then been swept over Vernal Fall, to their death of course. The book "Off the Wall: Death in Yosemite " is just one story after another of bad judgement leading to catastrophic results.
