Elijah McCoy was a Canadian-American inventor of a device to lubricate steam engines. McCoy’s inventions were considered so outstanding that customers reportedly asked for the “real McCoy” when requesting his designs.

Born free on the Ontario shore of Lake Erie to parents who fled enslavement in Kentucky, he traveled to the United States as a young child when his family returned in 1847, becoming a U.S. resident and citizen.

2014年1月27日 · At the age of fifteen, Elijah McCoy left Canada for Edinburgh, Scotland, where he apprenticed for five years as a mechanical engineer. By the end of his career, he had registered over 50 patents. Park House in Colchester South in Ontario was a refuge for those escaping slavery in the 1800s.

2021年1月24日 · At the age of 15, McCoy left the United States for a mechanical engineering apprenticeship in Edinburgh, Scotland. After becoming certified, he returned to Michigan to pursue a position in his field.

2007年3月3日 · Once the McCoy family settled in Canada, they were extremely poor. Nonetheless they saved money for their son to get an education. When McCoy was 15 years old, he was sent to a boarding school in Edinburgh, Scotland to study mechanical engineering.

At the age of 15, McCoy travelled to Scotland to pursue an education in engineering because he was facing educational barriers in Canada. McCoy then moved back to Michigan, where he encountered difficulties finding a job that suited his level of education due to racial discrimination.

McCoy received his early education in the black schools of Ontario, Canada’s Colchester Township. Later, after studying at the University of Edinburgh, in Edinburgh, Scotland, he was certified as a mechanical engineer.
