The EA-6A was a direct conversion of the standard Grumman A-6 Intruder airframe, equipped with a twin-seat cockpit along with assorted electronic warfare (EW) equipment. During December 1965, the EA-6A entered squadron service with the USMC; shortly thereafter, it saw action in Operation Rolling Thunder during the Vietnam War . [ 5 ]

The Electronic Warfare version of the A2F-1 (later A-6A) was the A2F-1H or Q depending on source information. The aircraft was ordered through a contract with Grumman in March of 1962 in response to Marine Corps requirements to replace the aging F3D-2Q Skyknights. It was redesignated the EA-6A in September 1962.

The EA-6A is recognized as the premier U.S. tactical ECM support aircraft in the Vietnam era employing a full spectrum receiving system integrated with up to 20 steerable high power radar jammers housed in 5 external pods, two chaff dispensing pods, and a state-of- the art communications jammer.

In 1966, a modified A-6 (known as the “Electric Intruder,” or EA-6A)—equipped with special electronics to detect, identify, and jam enemy radar—entered service.

The EA-6A could carry radio frequency (RF) jammer pods, chaff pods, or fuel tanks on its underwing pylons -- an extra pylon was fitted outside the wing fold, capable of hauling light stores like chaff dispensers, giving a total of seven pylons.

It arrived in country in 1965 with RF-8 and EA-6B a/c and transitioned to RF-4B and EA-6A's. We left in July 70 without an in flight accident. Pretty good record for 5 yrs flying 4 different aircraft.
