Dude. Dude is American English slang for an individual, typically male. From the 1870s to the 1960s, dude primarily meant a person who dressed in an extremely fashionable manner (a dandy) or a conspicuous citified person who was visiting a rural location, a "city slicker".

American native speakers will sometimes transform dude into the female-specific dudette, as dude was originally male specific - though these days, dude is used a lot for men and women. It's gendered when you say "a dude" referring to a person/male, but it's non-gendered when you are using it as an expletive title, such as "Dude, you look amazing" or as a plural as in, "Hey, what's up dudes." At the end of the day, dude may be used by many as a gender neutral term, but it is still also used in a solely male sense. I don’t have an issue with being called dude. You probably don’t either, but it does align with our gender identity.
