The Douglas DC-4E was an American experimental airliner that was developed before World War II. The DC-4E never entered production due to being superseded by an entirely new design, the Douglas DC-4 / C-54, which proved very successful.
The DC-4E was to have a range of 2,000 miles, a cruise speed of 190 mph, a pressurized and air-conditioned cabin, tricycle landing gear, and a broad array of other new features. Douglas engineers began the task of designing and building this colossus of the airways. New engineering ground was broken nearly every day during the task.
