Dorothy Caldwell (born 1948) is a Canadian fibre artist. Her work consists primarily of abstract textile based wall hangings that utilize techniques such as wax-resist, discharge dyeing, stitching, drawing, and appliqué [1]

Identifying my own personal landmarks, through gathering, touching, and recording is how I create a sense of place. The vocabulary for my work is drawn from studying textile traditions and ordinary stitching practices such as darning, mending and patching.

Dorothy Caldwell has become an icon for textile artists, exhibiting and teaching around the world. We Canadians claim her as our own, as she has lived in Ontario since the mid seventies, relocating here from the USA.

Dorothy Caldwell is a graduate of Tyler School of Art, in Philadelphia. She maintains an active international exhibition and teaching schedule from her studio in Hastings, Ontario.

2021年3月14日 · A sense of place is different. In her work, Dorothy Caldwell takes inspiration from the early European map makers, who divided Canada up into squares. In some of those squares they would mark where an unusual plant had been found, or some other interesting feature in the landscape.
