A Doppler ultrasonic flow meter uses a transducer to emit an ultrasonic beam into the stream flowing through the pipe. For the flow meter to operate, there must be particulates, such as solid particles or air bubbles, in the stream to reflect the ultrasonic beam.

There are two types of ultrasonic flow meters: transit time and Doppler. Transit time flow meters measure the time it takes for an ultrasonic beam to travel upstream and downstream in the fluid and calculate the flow velocity based on the difference in travel time.
