Discrete mathematics is the study of mathematical structures that can be considered "discrete" (in a way analogous to discrete variables, having a bijection with the set of natural numbers) rather than "continuous" (analogously to continuous functions).

At the University of Illinois, this course is taught right after one term of programming and one term of calculus, so it's critical that the course be accessible to students with limited background but prepare them for subsequent theoretical CS courses.
