Both amber and clear Bulls Eye shellac have a natural waxy substance that interferes with the adhesion of oil-based polyurethane and water-based finishes. To address that problem, Zinsser created SealCoat, a dewaxed shellac, meaning it has the wax removed. That’s why you see SealCoat advertised as a “Universal Sanding Sealer” on the can.

I don't consider shellac cloudy. Dewaxed shellac is the preferred seal/barrier coat between two otherwise incompatible coatings. Some coatings can't handle the natural wax in shellac.

Personally, I'd use Arm-R-Seal because it has the same solids content as Waterlox yet is designed to be wiped on w/o having to thin it. That means you only need 3 or 4 coats. I wipe it on with a paper towel or a piece of microfiber cloth.

2010年10月7日 · I have used dewaxed shellac as a seal coat before applying Minwax Polycrylic without a problem. I did it for the same reasons; lessen raising the grain. However, I was disappointed in the amount that the grain still raised. The denatured alcohol solvent for the shellac has some percentage of water depending on the percent of alcohol.

If you want to use only dewaxed so that a finish coat in a different finish will adhere better, just let the shellac sit for a while in a glass jar and then pour off the clear shellac in the upper half leaving the cloudy wax containing portion in the jar. Paul, I learned the shellac-oil mixture from Paul Rad on rec.woodworking. He was often called the "prince of shellac", and I believe he was friends with Jeff Jewitt. Most of what I know about using shellac came from the two of them.
