Due to damage to blood vessels in the dermis, bloody discharge or haemorrhagic crusts are common with a risk of haematogenous spread and bacteraemia.

The signs of deep pyoderma in dogs include pain, crusting, odor, and secretions of blood and pus. Redness, swelling, ulceration, scabs, and blisters may also be seen. The bridge of the muzzle, chin, elbows, hocks, knees, and spaces between the toes are more prone to deep infections, but any area may be involved.

The hallmarks of deep pyoderma in dogs are pain, crusting, odor, and exudation of blood and pus. Erythema, swelling, ulcerations, hemorrhagic crusts and bullae, hair loss, and draining tracts with serohemorrhagic or purulent exudate may also be seen.

In dogs with deep pyoderma or heavily crusted lesions, clipping of lesions or whirlpool therapy may be beneficial. Shampoo frequency depends on severity of infection: In severe cases or in cases of methicillin-resistant pyoderma, shampoo therapy every 1 to 2 days is recommended.
