Éamon de Valera [a] [b] (/ ˈ eɪ m ən ˌ d ɛ v ə ˈ l ɛər ə,-ˈ l ɪər-/, Irish: [ˈeːmˠən̪ˠ dʲɛ ˈwalʲəɾʲə]; first registered as George de Valero; changed some time before 1901 to Edward de Valera; [2] 14 October 1882 – 29 August 1975) was an American-born Irish statesman and political leader.

Eamon de Valera was an Irish politician and patriot, who served as taoiseach (prime minister; 1932–48, 1951–54, 1957–59) and president (1959–73) of Ireland. An active revolutionary from 1913, he became president of Sinn Féin in 1917 and founded the Fianna Fáil party in 1926.

Following enactment by the people of the Constitution, Eamon De Valera became Taoiseach (Prime Minister) and Minister for External Affairs from 1937 – 48. He was Taoiseach again from 1951 – 54, 1957 – 59. On 25 June, 1959 he was inaugurated as President of Ireland. He died on 29 August 1975.
