David Ruff Piper (born 2 December 1930) [1] is a British former Formula One and sports car racing driver from England. He participated in 3 Formula One World Championship Grands Prix, debuting on 18 July 1959.

David Piper is the complete English gentleman and keen competitor. As a lad I followed the exploits of the green Ferraris and later in life worked as part of his team for about 30 years. Don’t forget he was the first man to race a Porsche 917 when the works drivers stuck to their 908s.

There are few people in the motor racing world as beguiling as David Piper. In an era where sex was safe and racing dangerous (has this phrase become cliché yet?) David was an outsider on the inside. A privateer in a world of factory teams, a skilled wheelman who could also wrench through the night.

The Englishman won no less than seven out of the nine Kyalami 9 Hour races he started through the 1960s. Among Piper’s most notable successes throughout his lengthy career, were right here in sunny South Africa.
