High carbon damascus is often made with a 10XX series steel (1084, 1095) or a high carbon alternative. The high carbon steel is paired with a steel high in nickel like 15N20.

So, i started by polishing it with a dremel which made the upper steel really shiny. However the bottom steel looked kinda beige/light grey so i decided to etch it in coffee to darken it.

The older books specify 1095 and pure nickel (which is not hardenable but prevents carbon migration) or 1095 and A203E, a low-carbon steel with a lot of nickel.

2011年10月5日 · pros: the look. cons: eventually you will get into the nature stone sharpening to get the most out of the contrast of steel, again its the look. and nature stones are much harder to find a right way to get into it. but once you get into it, its endless. you will throw your chosera/sharpton away right away. and for the nature stone, sky is your limit.

2009年3月30日 · Hello, I finally got around to using some nice 15n20 and 1095 for a damascus billet the other day and when I etched it I was a little disappointed in how the black color of the 1095 just washed away when I cleaned off the rest of the Ferric Chloride (1-4 ratio at room temp).

Even the overseas pakistan/india/ china etc imported damascus blades made from common blends of good steels, like 1095/5160, or 1095/1075 mixes can be junk knives too ...

2005年9月30日 · I talked with someone at a show once that had differant shades of blue and gold in thier damascus. They said that they used nitra blue. Which you can get anything from yellow to dark blue with, depending on the temp you used. They had the blade with the carbon steel being a bright peacock blue and the 15N20 turned gold at about the same temp.
