A suprapubic cystostomy or suprapubic catheter (SPC) [1] (also known as a vesicostomy or epicystostomy) is a surgically created connection between the urinary bladder and the skin used to drain urine from the bladder in individuals with obstruction of normal urinary flow.

A suprapubic catheter allows you to drain your bladder continuously. Not emptying your bladder can cause: Severe pain. Swelling (distended bladder). Urinary tract infection (UTI). Permanent damage to your bladder or kidneys. Death. Some people think a suprapubic catheter is more comfortable and easier to use than a urethral catheter.
