Typically, a carpenter picks up the piece on one end and sights down the edge, if it humps up, that is considered the crown. On rafters and floor joists, the crown is placed up, figuring it will sag and somewhat straighten out over time. Crowned wall studs are set aside and cut up for shorter pieces since you don't want a hump or dish in a wall.

Also, if you think the crown is going to fall off the wall with only a few nails in the bottom at the studs, just use a little PL or Liquid Nails and it will be there for as long as you let it be.

2005年6月6日 · I don't see how this is possible. Crown fits the ceiling diagonally, so the lower portion will have a shorter distance to cover than the upper portion. This is like trying to stretch the crown. My suggestion would be to make your own crown out of multiple pieces. First attach, say, a 1X3 flat to the vertical wall (with the 3" portion vertical).

As for the radius of the crown; you could turn to page 1056 of the 20th edition of the "Machinery's Handbook" and there find a chart showing the proper crown for wheels of various diameters.

When edge-gluing boards to make a solid-wood panel, you can use hardwood cauls about 1 in. thick by 2 in. wide by up to 30 in. long. Use them in pairs to sandwich the boards together and keep them flush while other clamps apply the main pressure to the boards’ edges.
