Chun Doo-hwan (Korean: 전두환; [tɕʌn du.ɦwɐn]; 18 January 1931 – 23 November 2021) was a South Korean politician, army general and military dictator [2] [3] [4] [5] who served as the fifth president of South Korea from 1980 to 1988.

Chun Doo-Hwan was a Korean soldier and politician who helped lead the 1979 coup that overthrew the government and who later served as president of South Korea (1980–88). In the 1990s he was convicted of various crimes and sentenced to death.

Chun Doo-hwan (6 March 1931 – 23 November 2021) was a Korean military officer and the President of South Korea from 1980 to 1988. He was sentenced to death in 1996. Chun was later pardoned by President Kim Young-sam on the advice of then President-elect Kim Dae-jung, who was sentenced to death by Chun some 20 years earlier.
