May 17, 2019 · But I was wondering exactly how high up in the mountains are these Caucasian bees from in the Republic of Georgia. As you go east away from the Black Sea to the eastern Caucasus mountains, the climate gets dryer and colder during the winter (harsher climate). Armenian bees are from this area in the eastern part of the Caucasus mountain range.

And so, this is entirely possible that here in the US we do have genes of the yellow Caucasians floating around as well. There you have it - "Italian" looking bee doing "wet" capping. US is just a big bee melting pot, for both good and bad.

Then I found this which sorta confirms it: Genes from European dark honeybees surprisingly found in Arkansas - Talk Business & Politics I suspect those are the bees that got me interested in beekeeping back in 2009.

May 4, 2015 · Mountains and deserts don't move (on our time scale). Rivers move rather slowly. Climate is always changing but gradually and slowly (while annual gyrations occur rather routinely and repeatedly - cold winter/warm winter). If trivially not fed, every one of us will die much faster than we die to some cancer.

Aug 28, 2024 · I don't remember the last time I flipped a box, except to make a cell finisher (with brood in top, queen in bottom), but that's just me. Live in TN mountains for reference. Also not saying anything I do is the correct way. But they seem to know what they are doing. I guess if I had different goals it might make sense during parts of the year.

Dec 21, 2023 · Very interesting topic. We’re in mid-TN mountains with fairly substantial shifts (and no forage) for almost 4 months. My wife was in Puerto Rico taking pics of a bee on a pineapple Tuesday morning. She said it was 80F (26C) and extremely windy. It was 31F (~0.6C) here. 🥶😃

Jun 30, 2013 · To me a dearth means there is not enough nectar and pollen coming in to sustain the colony, whereas they starve unless they are fed are have enough stores built up to carry them until the next flow.

Feb 12, 2014 · The cold rolls down off the mountains and tends to settle in the valleys. The winds though, winds are brutal in open places. Different challenges in different places. One thing I really like is the smell of the mountain propolis, it smells like the forest. I keep some in a jar and smell it off and on all winter long and it always makes me happy.
