The picturesque village of Catoctin Furnace is one of the latter types of places. Its history is, in microcosm, the history of the Industrial Revolution in America. The earliest European settlers to enter the Monocacy River Valley at the foot of Catoctin Mountain arrived in the 1730s.
Museum of the Ironworker – Catoctin Furnace Historical Society
Built ca. 1820-1821, the stone worker dwelling at 12610 Catoctin Furnace Road is now known as the Museum of the Ironworker. In partnership with the owner, the State of Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR), CFHS signed a 20-year lease in 2017.
