The Chair of Saint Peter (Latin: Cathedra Petri), also known as the Throne of Saint Peter, is a relic conserved in St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, the sovereign enclave of the Pope inside Rome, Italy.

The chair or cathedra of Peter symbolizes the perpetual continuity of the doctrine and its promise of infallibility. It triumphed over all heresies throughout the centuries. The fine alabaster window, surrounded by golden clouds and angels flying between rays of light, casts a mystical warmth through the basilica, especially in the afternoon.

That is what the Cathedra Petri is, it is what is believed to be the ancient throne of St. Peter, made of oak, but here encased in bronze and gold, very much the way that, historically, relics — remnants of saints and other sacred people — were encased in jewels and gold.

The “Cathedra Sancti Petri Apostoli” is traditionally considered to be the episcopal throne of Saint Peter: an ancient wooden throne, symbol of the Petrine primacy and the Pope’s magisterium, with ivory plaques depicting the labours of Hercules and with friezes, again in ivory, dating from the Carolingian age (9th century).

Cathedra Petri is a relic that can be found in St. Peter's Basilica. The actual wooden chair is placed inside a beautifully sculpted bronze casing. The casing was designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and was built between the years 1647–53.

The apse in St Peter's Basilica is dominated by Bernini's Cathedra Petri (Chair of St Peter), a gloriously ornate reliquary, which holds a wooden throne once believed to be the one on which St Peter himself sat as bishop of Rome.
