Oct 30, 2020 · Carfax, as has been mentioned is somewhat voluntary when it comes to dealers. I own an independent automotive repair shop and use Carfax to decipher the vin number. It is part of the garage management software. In doing this any repairs performed at my shop automatically will be reported to Carfax. I can't opt out on certain cars.

Jul 7, 2010 · CARFAX is essentially useless for anything other than title changes and emissions tests. Ask a GM service writer to pull the car's VIS from their database - that will give you all the GM warranty, recall, and some shop work on that car.

CarFax is probably the least comprehensive source of useful info, but occasionally it will report insurance-related information, (like an accident) so it's still a must-have item.

Anything else not required by Federal or State law, such as some forms of damage or major repair is voluntary on the part of the current owner, so info is scarce.

Jul 4, 2014 · The CarFax report says it was listed for sale May 15th. $39K seems like a smoking deal for this model, but it hasn't sold. The CarFax also says "Listed as a manufacturer vehicle Sold at auction" 3 days before they listed it for sale.

But in general, the rep. said this issue likely wasn't a red flag, as it this is typically a sign that the customer upgraded to performance coils, and one was bad out of the box. I actually saw a spark plug change on the Carfax that I missed my first time through.
