2021年1月27日 · One of my rear balconies has a 6' roof overhang without any supports. I didn't want a lot of structure, so the overhang is supported by two cantilever beams inside the exterior walls. The rafters in the overhang sit on these two beams. These need to go back a fair bit (I think it was around 10' inside the wall).

With 16" o.c. joists, a 1' overhang and a 10' wide roof, that's about 600 pounds pushing down on the end of each joist. That's for a static load.

2021年5月3日 · It doesn't make any sense to not cantilever the rafters if you are going for 3' overhangs. It will cost you a lot of money to find an acceptable structural solution. Like Akos said just air seal the rafters sticking out of the roof. Another solution is to wrap the insulation and the wrb around the overhang.

2019年7月27日 · At the gable ends there are two lowered trusses so outlookers on edge can fly out (6′ inside of building, 3′ overhang). I can always shorten the overhang if it seems too long for a 2×4 but I’d like to keep them as long as possible. 3′ does a good job shading the summer sun.

For practical and aesthetic reasons, I would go somewhere between 12" and 16". On a retrofit with stucco wall cladding your most vulnerable joint is going to be where the new roof meets that material.

2022年10月26日 · I’d like to have 18-24” overhangs on the sides and low end and a 3’ overhang on the high side if I can do it. My main concern is with the high end of the roof and the corners. I was thinking of running the 2×4 strapping out long and scabbing on 2x4s on edge beneath them and running back to the wall to support the cantilever.
