Unless I did some calculations wrong, combining Marylands state and local taxes ends up being more expensive than California taxes.

Central MD/Northern VA/DC is more like California (I often heard the Fairfax, VA tourism board advertised on the radio in SoCal). Western MD is mountain country.

The reason I feel so jaded, now that I moved back to Maryland is because the price of one bedroom apartment here is the same as California basically.

Just looking for a little insight on what the income tax would look like for this situation. The community of California, Maryland is an unicoporated part of St. Mary's County, and was named after the state of California before 1897. The exact origins are unknown, however one story is that a family from the state moved to the area, using materials from their home state to build their new house, called the “California Farmstead.”

I used to go to GW and currently live in Rockville so I understand the commute well. Being from California myself, I chose to live in Rockville because of the lower rent and better public transportation in Maryland. One thing to note is that unlike most of California’s cities, the highways around here actually go around DC.
